    Ms. Ulmer

Lawton Elementary’s beloved 5th grade teacher, Lily Ulmer, passed away on April 30. Ms. Ulmer spent her entire career at Lawton from student teaching onward.

For the last 9 years, Lily taught science and social studies to 4th and 5th graders. Lily’s love of learning stretched well beyond the walls of Lawton through her collaborations with other educators across many schools, central office and at the University of Washington.

Lily’s passion for enlightening her students on the impact of their choices on both the environment and social issues led to meaningful learning. Lily brought her all to her students in the classroom each day. She nurtured student leaders and student passions in everything from salmon hatching, cafeteria composting, Harry Potter Club, Dolphin Times News, numerous Islandwood trips, and much more. Lily provided a safe space for students to be their authentic selves. Her classroom was always a gathering space for students and staff as her joyful, welcoming and inclusive warmth brought a sense of peace and a feeling of acceptance to all that entered.

Lily was the kind of teacher many aspire to be – warm, engaging, and deeply committed to the success of her students. Lily showed incredible positivity, strength, and determination in her cancer fight, and we are deeply saddened by her loss.

There will be a remote laying in service on Friday, June 11 at 3 p.m. Check your principal newsletter for the link. It was Lily's wish to use a composting service to return her body to the nature she loved so dearly. Find out more information about the process and what to expect.
